Understanding Screed

When it comes to constructing solid and long-lasting floors, screed plays a vital but often overlooked role. At CWM Aggregates Ltd, we supply high-quality screed materials to help builders, contractors, and homeowners across Hampshire and the South of England achieve professional flooring finishes, whether in residential, commercial, or industrial settings.

But what exactly is screed—and why does it matter? Let’s break it down.

What Is Screed?

Screed is a layer of material, generally made from a mixture of cement and fine aggregates such as sharp sand, that’s applied over a concrete subfloor. Its main purpose is to create a smooth, level base ready to receive your final flooring—whether that’s tiles, laminate, wood, carpet, or vinyl.

Unlike concrete, which is designed to bear structural loads, screed focuses on providing a flat, even finish. It’s also commonly used to cover underfloor heating systems and to enhance thermal performance in modern builds. To discover more about what we offer visit our products and services page.

Different Types of Screed

There are several kinds of screed available, each tailored to specific applications and performance requirements. At CWM Aggregates, we help you choose the right type for your job:

  1. Traditional Sand & Cement Screed

This is the classic mix—cement blended with sharp sand, typically applied by hand and levelled using a straight edge. It’s incredibly versatile and can be used for both bonded and unbonded applications.

  1. Bonded Screed

This screed is fully bonded to the underlying concrete using an adhesive or bonding agent. Ideal for areas where space is limited or heavy load-bearing is expected.

  1. Unbonded Screed

In this method, screed is laid over a damp-proof membrane, allowing it to “float” slightly. It reduces the risk of cracks caused by shrinkage and is especially useful in moisture-prone environments.

  1. Floating Screed

Perfect for thermal and acoustic insulation, floating screed is laid on top of insulation boards. This is the go-to option when you’re installing underfloor heating, as it helps conduct heat more evenly through the surface.

  1. Flowing or Liquid Screed

This self-levelling screed is made using calcium sulphate instead of cement. It’s quick to pour and dries faster than traditional screeds, making it an ideal solution for large areas or fast-paced projects.

Why Use Screed?

There’s more to screed than just aesthetics. Here are some of the reasons it’s essential in modern construction:

  • Flawless Finish: Screed creates a perfectly level base for final flooring, reducing imperfections and ensuring a clean look.
  • Structural Support: When installed properly, screed enhances the overall strength of the floor and increases load tolerance.
  • Improved Efficiency: Especially when paired with underfloor heating, screed helps distribute warmth more evenly and effectively.
  • Moisture Control: Certain screed types improve moisture resistance, protecting both the floor and the property from damp-related issues.
