Grab and Tipper Hire, Eastleigh

Grab hire removes soil, hardcore and concrete from a site without anyone loading it by hand. The lorry parks on the road, the hydraulic arm reaches over the boundary, and the material goes straight into the body. For most jobs in Eastleigh it works out quicker and cheaper than a skip, and it avoids the licence a skip needs when it sits on a public road.

CWM Aggregates operates from Knowle Lane in Fair Oak, inside Eastleigh Borough and in the same SO50 postcode area as the town itself. That means short runs to sites across Eastleigh, Bishopstoke, Horton Heath and Chandler’s Ford, and same-day or next-day collection when the fleet has capacity.

What is grab hire and who is it for? Grab hire is a lorry fitted with a hydraulic grab arm that lifts loose material directly from where it sits. It suits homeowners clearing a driveway excavation, landscapers stripping out a garden, and groundworkers moving spoil off a plot. Our grab arm extends up to 6.2 metres, so material can be lifted over a wall or fence rather than carted through the house or down a shared drive.

Grab Hire or Tipper Hire?

The main difference between Grab Hire and Tipper Hire is how the material gets into the lorry. A grab lorry loads itself using its own arm, which makes it the right choice when there is nothing on site to lift with. A tipper needs loading by an excavator or loading shovel, so it tends to be the cheaper option on larger sites where a machine is already working.

On a domestic job in Eastleigh — a driveway dig-out, a patio strip, a garden clearance — grab hire is almost always the one you want. On a housing plot or commercial site with a digger standing, tippers move the same tonnage for less, particularly across multiple loads.

Both are available with hire priced per load, per hour or per day, and contract rates for repeat or long-term work.

What We Remove from Eastleigh Sites

We are a licensed waste carrier and operate our own transfer station, so material collected in Eastleigh is handled and processed rather than passed on. We regularly take away:

  • Soil and earth from excavations and garden clearances
  • Clean and mixed hardcore
  • Concrete and rubble
  • Sub-base spoil
  • Aggregates left over from site strip-outs

Material needs to be inert. If a load has plasterboard, timber, plastic or general builders’ waste mixed through it, tell us when you book so we can advise on the right way to deal with it. For smaller loads you can bring in yourself, it helps to know where to take construction waste in Eastleigh and what each site will accept.

Access on Eastleigh Streets

Access is the reason most Eastleigh customers end up on grab hire rather than skips. The terraced streets around the town centre and Newtown have little off-road parking and no room for a skip outside the house, and much of the 1930s and post-war housing across Boyatt Wood and Bishopstoke has long, narrow rear gardens with no vehicle route to the back.

A grab lorry solves both. It only needs to stop legally within reach of the material, and the arm does the rest over the fence or wall.

When you request a quote, it helps to tell us:

  • Whether the road has parking restrictions or a resident permit scheme
  • The distance from where the lorry can stop to where the material sits
  • Whether anything overhead — trees, cables, a carport — sits between the two
  • Roughly how much material there is, and what it is

Good to know: If the material is already piled near a driveway edge, fence line or boundary wall, the job usually takes one visit and no site preparation. Nothing needs bagging or containing beforehand.

Projects We Work On Across Eastleigh

Eastleigh mixes established residential streets with active housing development and a long-standing industrial base, and the work reflects that. At CWM Aggregates, we supply grab and tipper hire for:

  • Driveway and patio excavations
  • Garden clearances and landscaping strip-outs
  • Extension and garage base digs
  • Groundworks on new housing plots around Horton Heath, Boorley Green and Fair Oak
  • Site clearance on the industrial estates off Chickenhall Lane and Wide Lane
  • Muck away on commercial and civils contracts

Grab Hire Compared With a Skip

A skip placed on a public road in Eastleigh needs a licence from the highway authority, which costs money and takes time to arrange. A grab lorry needs neither, because it is a vehicle making a delivery rather than a container left in place.

The other difference is volume. A grab load takes roughly 13 tonnes, which is well beyond what a builders’ skip holds, so one grab visit often replaces several skip exchanges on the same job. Skips still make sense where waste comes out slowly over days and needs somewhere to go in the meantime. Grab hire suits material that is already out of the ground and ready to move.

FAQ

Our grab lorries carry approximately 13 tonnes per load, which covers most driveway excavations and garden clearances in a single visit. For larger volumes we can arrange multiple loads or put tippers on the job instead.

No licence is required for grab hire, because the lorry is only stopping to load rather than being left on the road. A skip standing on a public highway does need a licence from the highway authority, which is one of the reasons grab hire tends to be quicker to arrange.

The hydraulic arm extends up to 6.2 metres, so material in a rear garden can often be lifted straight over the fence or wall provided the lorry can park within that distance. Overhead cables, mature trees or a deep front garden can reduce what is reachable, so it is worth mentioning the layout when you book.

Muck away is the removal of excavated soil, subsoil and spoil from a site, usually after a dig for foundations, a driveway or a swimming pool. We collect it by grab or tipper depending on access and volume, and take it to our own transfer station for processing.

Same-day and next-day collection is often possible for Eastleigh sites given how close the Fair Oak yard is, though it depends on fleet availability. Booking a day or two ahead gives the best chance of the slot you want.
